Which model is the Best George Foreman Indoor Outdoor Grill?

How are these grills alike?

As you can see from the chart above, the similarities are many. With any model you choose you get a good sized, convertible grill that can be used for cooking indoors or outside, with the quality George Foreman brand name backed by a 3 year limited warranty. They are all fully electric which makes them perfect for outdoor cooking anywhere that charcoal or gas flames are not allowed.

All these models easily convert for indoor use as well. Just be aware that your counter surface should be able to withstand temperatures of up to 150 degrees. Also keep in mind that these grills have only a single grill plate. That is, they are not a substitute for an indoor contact grill like the Cuisinart Griddler or the Breville Smart Grill.

All of these grills are designed with the patented sloped grill plate that allows grease to drain off. Each model also has a removable drip trap and a variable temperature control with an indicator light.

Colors are varying shades of silver, with the one standout being the bright red GVO201R. They all have a dome shaped lid to allow plenty of head space for grilling thick or bulky foods.

If you’re concerned about price, in this case that probably won’t be a huge factor in your decision. Of all the grills in the chart above, the difference in price between the most and least expensive is only a little over $30.

How do these indoor outdoor grill models differ?

Cleaning: Only one of the models has a grill plate that can be removed for cleaning, the GGR50B. The grill plate of the GGR50B is dishwasher safe, but grill plates of all the others must be cleaned by hand using non-abrasive materials.

Complaints about the coating on any of these grills are few and far between. One advantage of the GGR50B is that it’s been on the market far longer than any of the other models, so it has a very good track record based on a huge number of consumer reports. (That’s a whole lot of cooking and cleaning by a whole lot of folks!) Some people also love the fact that the GGR50B’s grill plate can go in the dishwasher. Others don’t care because it’s quite large and they’d rather just wash it up by hand and save dishwasher space for everything else.

Vented Lid: Only the GGR50B has a vented lid. Obviously, you don’t have to deal with all the smoke created by charcoal grilling, but the vent does allow for releasing moisture. Without this vent, you may experience condensation collecting when cooking certain foods. This can be a very big deal or a non-issue to you, depending on your personal taste and culinary skills. Many seasoned grillers are horrified at the thought of not having a vent in the lid!

Temperature Gauge: Only the GFO3320GM has a temperature gauge. At first glance this seems like an excellent feature, especially for those of us with a tendency to get a little OCD. If I’m cooking a food I’ve never grilled before, I like the idea of having a gauge to show me the actual temperature under that little dome. That gives me more control so I know when to make adjustments, right? Well, maybe.

In fact, the gauge may not be accurate all the time, or even most of the time. Here’s a statement directly from the owners manual of the GFO3320GM:

“Important: An artificially low temperature will be shown on the temperature gauge if excessive amounts of food are placed on the grill plate or if the grill lid is frequently removed during cooking. Regardless of this use, the grill plate will continue cooking at the temperature setting selected on the control probe.”

In other words, the temperature gauge isn’t necessarily going to help. You can count on these grills to maintain heat at the temperature you have selected. Depending on what that temperature gauge shows could steer you wrong. Knowing when you need to adjust the temperature up or down is more a matter of learning from experience.

Based on all the above, I still have to go with the original George Foreman GGR50B as the best choice. It’s one of the most expensive in the chart above, but it offers maximum cooking surface area, it’s easy to clean, and it has all the great features that are standard with George Foreman indoor outdoor grill models.

Most importantly, it has stood the test of time. One of the first products I ever researched was the GGR50B, and that review was written over 5 years ago. It was a favorite among consumers from the beginning, and it has now been on the market long enough to have earned an excellent reputation, which is surely why it continues to be a number one bestseller (and why it keeps getting more and more 4 and 5 star reviews!).
